Chapter 40

Lao Tzu

反者道之动,弱者道之用。天下万物生于有,有生于无。

Lau

Turning back is how the way moves;

Weakness is the means the way employs.

The myriad creatures in the world are born from

Something, and Something from Nothing.

Waley

In Tao the only motion is returning;

The only useful quality, weakness.

For though all creatures under heaven are the products of Being,

Being itself is the product of Not-being.

James Legge

The movement of the Dao By contraries proceeds; And weakness marks the course Of Dao's mighty deeds.

All things under heaven sprang from It as existing (and named); that existence sprang from It as non- existent (and not named).
